2018 has been a rollercoaster for me.
I spent the year focusing on others instead of myself. So to end the 4th quarter of the year I decided to set some personal goals for myself, one being to embrace my curly hair more. I am one month and 9 days heat free, which has been a struggle for me. Y’all know I love a good silk press! With straight hair I feel sexier and more “put together.” So wearing my curly hair is more about me breaking out of my comfort zone and a step towards loving everything about me.
My curly hair was
severely heat damaged. I was getting silk presses twice a month for 3 years. For
those who don’t know, a silk press requires lots of heat - blow drying and flat
ironing of 400-450 degrees heat. The results are flawless but overtime it can
cause your curls to become nonexistent. If I knew what I knew now I would have only
gotten a silk press once every 2 months- to preserve my curls and avoid having
to cut my hair. Which is what I decided to do, I decided to get a Deva Cut.
The inspiration for this cut came from my colleague Nicole; she has the beautiful curly hair that reminds me of how my hair was before all the silk presses. She was raving about her upcoming Deva Cut and recommended I get one since I’m all about embracing my curly hair now. I started searching the #DevaCut hashtag on IG and before I knew it I was 5 hours in watching YouTube videos and learning about the benefits of a Deva Cut. I’m more of a wash & go type of woman, I give very minimal effort to my curly hair when it comes to styling and a Deva Cut is tailored to that lifestyle.
A Deva Cut is a dry
curly hair cut intended for people with curly, wavy or coily hair. The main benefit
is reviving dull lifeless curls, which is exactly what I needed. Each curl is
cut individually at an angle to provide shape and not disrupt the curl pattern.
The process normally takes about 1-2 hours depending on length and texture and
is performed by a certified Deva Cut stylist My cut took 2.5 hours, this
included cutting, washing, styling and a product consultation.
Not all stylists are skilled in cutting curly hair, which is
why I decided to turn to DevaCurl.com to find a certified Deva Cut stylist. It’s
a website dedicated to the curly hair lifestyle from products for all curly
hair textures to helping you find a certified curly hair stylist. Find your
Deva Cut certified stylist here. Certification
tiers range from level 1- level 3, level
3 being the most advanced. Through the stylist
finder I was able to find Leah, a level 1 Diva Inspired Stylist at DisporiaSalon in Baltimore, MD. Before booking with Leah, I checked out her Instagram to
see her work and I was highly impressed. Her work is amazing she specializes in
Deva Cut transformation cuts. This is a cut intended on helping damaged curly
hair transform back into the original curl pattern. Once I booked with her I
was instructed to check out their website to prepare for my cut. Their site
provides detailed steps to prepare for a Deva Cut these steps include detoxing,
conditioning and styling hair in a wash and go with water based products before your appointment. The
stylist needs to see your hair in your current curl pattern as she will cut your
hair first then will wash and style it.

In short, this cut was an experience. Leah was amazing and very knowledgeable about curly
hair; if you are in the DMV and looking for a Deva Cut I highly recommend booking
with her. She did an awesome job, showed me each product she used and taught me
how to use each and create more volume. She changed the way I will complete my wash & go look going forward. As the days pass my hair will get more volume and
I love my new cut and I’m looking forward to embracing my
curls and nursing back to health.
